A gutter is pretty much a necessity for all houses, especially if your house is in an area that has a lot of rain. Water should drain from your roof and not just run off, a gutter is there to properly direct the f water from your roof. One of the downsides is that a gutter can and will get clogged with leaves. Items like covers or gutter guards help decrease the amount of leaves clogging a gutter, but it still needs to be cleaned a couple of times a year.
Gutters are usually made from aluminum or vinyl, though there are higher end products available like copper. Though fastening a gutter to the roof is a fairly basic procedure, it should be installed by a pro, as the wrong installation could cause a gutter to fall during a storm or not drain properly if not level. Also, many installers recommend adding a downspout, instead of having the water flow off the side of your house.
